Tidal Modulation of a Lateral Shear Margin: Priestley Glacier, Antarctica
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use high resolution, ground-based observations of ice displacement to investigate deformation across the floating left-lateral shear margin Priestley Glacier, Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica. Bare conditions allow us fix survey marks directly glacier surface. A combination continuous positioning a local reference mark, and repeat network 33 stakes installed 2 km width are used quantify strain rates response tidal forcing over an 18-day period. Along-flow velocity observed at Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) station within varies by up ∼30% mean speed (±28 m −1 ) diurnal cycles, with faster flow during falling tide slower rising tide. Long-term in approximates simple small component flow-parallel shortening. At shorter timescales, precise optical techniques high-resolution across-flow bending ocean tide, including strains on order 10 –5 . An elastodynamic model informed field is simulate motion deformation. Flexure concentrated margin, such that non-homogeneous elastic modulus implied best account for combined observations. The pattern also depends extent coupling between valley sidewall. These conclusions suggest investigations properties made using vertical motion, but neglecting horizontal surface strain, will lead incorrect about potentially over-simplified assumptions sidewall boundary condition.

Flow dynamics of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica
Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (80%) and lateral (20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, i...
متن کاملSurface "Waves" on Byrd Glacier, Antarctica
Byrd Glacier has one of the largest ice catchment areas in Antarctica, delivers more ice to the Ross Ice Shelf than any other ice stream, and is the fastest of these ice streams. A force balance, combined with a mass balance, demonstrates that stream flow in Byrd Glacier is transitional from sheet flow in East Antarctica to shelf flow in the Ross Ice Shelf. The longitudinal pulling stress, calc...
متن کاملTerrasar-x Interferometric Observations of the Recovery Glacier System, Antarctica
Two methods for derivation of surface ice velocity from SAR data are presented. They are applied to the RAMP Glacier in East Antarctica, which was imaged in repeat pass by TerraSAR-X in 2008 as part of the International Polar Year (IPY). Coregistration methods and an algorithm to improve the interferometric phase quality are described. The accuracy of speckle tracking and interferometric phasee...
متن کاملBed conditions of Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica
Although 90% of Antarctica‟s discharge occurs via its fast-flowing ice streams, our ability to project future ice-sheet response has been limited by poor observational constraints on the ice-bed conditions used in numerical models to determine basal slip. We have helped address this observational deficit by acquiring and analysing a series of seismic reflection profiles to determine basal condi...
